PSR-LA Statement on Affirmation Action Ruling

Physicians for Social Responsibility-Los Angeles, as a group working to achieve the rights of the environment, social change, and racial equity, regrets the U.S. Supreme Court's recent rulings on affirmative action. These decisions move our society backwards, undoing decades of organizing and advocacy by communities disproportionately impacted by policies and practices that created racial disparities in education, economics, and health. Not acknowledging and accounting for the systemic racism of our nation's past — and present — is counter to and impedes the ability of historically oppressed communities to achieve justice.

As a public health organization, we recognize the importance of equitable educational opportunities in order to ensure just and healthy communities. There is a growing understanding that diverse learning environments benefit all, fostering a more robust and enriching environment to develop leaders. As healthcare professionals are some of the most powerful and trusted champions for healthier, more equitable communities, it is vital these trusted voices reflect the communities they serve.

In the face of these rulings, PSR-LA will continue its commitment to advocate for policies that realize justice and foster healthier, stronger communities across Southern California and beyond.
